General Specifications of HMS Iron Scrap

  1. Size and Thickness:
    • Minimum Thickness: 1/4 inch (6 mm). This is the most critical rule. Material thinner than this is classified as “shredder scrap” or “light iron” and is less valuable.
    • Maximum Dimensions: Individual pieces should be manageable for handling with magnets and cranes. A common maximum size is 5 feet x 2 feet (1.5m x 0.6m). Larger items like steel girders are often sheared or torched to meet this requirement.
  2. Density and Preparation:
    • The scrap must be heavy and dense. Think of structural beams, thick plates, and large machinery parts, not car bodies or thin sheet metal.
    • It must be free of excessive voids. This is why loose, random pieces are often compressed into dense bundles.
  3. Purity and Contaminants (Critical for Price):
    • Low Non-Ferrous Metals: Must be free of excessive copper, brass, aluminum, lead, and stainless steel. These elements contaminate the molten steel.
    • Low Non-Metallics: Must be free of dirt, sand, rubber, glass, plastic, and wood.
    • Minimal Coatings: While some rust, paint, and light coatings are acceptable, heavy galvanization (zinc coating) or other metal platings can be problematic and may be penalized.

Types of HMS Scrap

HMS is primarily categorized into two main grades, with a few other related categories.

1. HMS 1 (The Premium Grade)

  • Definition: Comprised of clean, heavy-grade iron and steel scrap.
  • Minimum Size: 1/4 inch (6mm) thick, with a minimum of 5 feet x 2 feet.
  • Examples: Wrought iron and steel sections (I-beams, H-beams, channel beams), clean steel plates, large machine parts, and used steel railroad rails.
  • Key Feature: Must be free of coated, lined, or galvanized materials. It is the cleanest and most desirable form of HMS.

2. HMS 2 (The Standard Grade)

  • Definition: Comprised of heavy-grade scrap but can include black iron, galvanized, and tinned steel (like old water tanks, appliances, etc.).
  • Minimum Size: Same as HMS 1 (1/4 inch thick).
  • Examples: All the items in HMS 1, plus galvanized steel, black iron pipes, and larger pieces of scrap from demolished appliances and machinery that meet the thickness requirement.
  • Key Feature: Less strict on coatings than HMS 1, making it more common but less valuable.

Common Commercial Mixes:

  • HMS 1 & 2 (80/20 Mix): This is a standard export commodity. It consists of 80% HMS 1 and 20% HMS 2. This mix is highly predictable for steel mills and is a benchmark for pricing.

Other Related Heavy Scrap:

  • Used Rail Scrap (URS): Often traded as a separate, premium category above HMS 1 due to its known high-quality steel composition.
  • Shredder Scrap: Not HMS. This is lighter gauge scrap (like car bodies) that has been shredded into small, uniform pieces.
Packaging & Shipping

Packaging of HMS Iron Scrap

  1. Bundling (The Most Common Method):
    • Process: Loose pieces of HMS are fed into a powerful hydraulic baling press. This machine compresses the scrap into a tight, rectangular block called a “bundle” or “bale.”
    • Benefits:
      • Increases Density: Reduces volume by up to 5 times, drastically cutting shipping costs.
      • Improves Handling: Bundles are uniform, stable, and easy to move with magnets and cranes.
      • Melts Efficiently: Dense bundles sink properly into the molten steel in a furnace, unlike loose, fluffy scrap.
    • Bundle Weight: Typically ranges from 500 kg to 1,500 kg per bundle.
  2. Loose (Unprepared):
    • Used for very large, singular pieces that are already dense (e.g., a large steel beam or a machinery frame that doesn’t require bundling).
    • Disadvantage: Much less efficient for shipping, so it often commands a lower price unless the pieces are exceptionally clean and heavy.
  3. Shipping:
    • Bulk Cargo: HMS bundles are loaded in large quantities into the holds of bulk carrier ships for international trade.
    • Containers: Smaller shipments can be sent in 20ft or 40ft open-top shipping containers.
